The
Leonberger breed is thought to have originated in Leonberg, Germany
around 1846. At that time, Heinrich Essig attempted to breed a dog
that resembled the lion on the town's crest.
It is believed that Essig bred a St Bernard and a Landseer Newfoundland
together, then bred back to a Great Pyrenees.
Despite their large size and shaggy coats, Leonbergers are indoor
family dogs-- they love to be close to their people, and suffer
when not given enough attention and affection.
Leonbergers are known for their extremely stable temperaments.
However, like any dog, proper socialization and training are needed
in order for them to become confident, well-behaved family members.
